The existing DNS Server need to be retired / upgraded
Symptoms
None
Cause
The existing DNS Server reached the retirement age / unable to serve the current load.
Workaround
STEP 1: Stop the DNS Server service on both DNS servers.
STEP 2: Copy the entire contents manually, including subfolders of the %SystemRoot%\System32\DNS folder from the source server to the destination server.
STEP 3: Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) on the current DNS server.
STEP 4: Locate and click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DNS Server\Zones
STEP 5: Export the Zones entry to a registry file.
STEP 6: Double-click on the registry file in order to import the Zonessubkeys into the registry at the destination DNS server.
STEP 7: Bring the current DNS server down and transfer its IP address to the destination DNS server.
STEP 8: Start the DNS Server service at the destination DNS server. To initiate the registration of the server’s A and PTR resource records, run the following command at a command prompt: ipconfig /registerdns.
